A practice of faith…

“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14

I chose this guiding scripture from Exodus because when people ask me what “Christian” yoga is, I simply say it is a practice of faith, a practice in the Presence of God who has promised through out all of scripture to be with us always… a promise God has been faithful to in the life of Jesus, a promise that God has for all people. Some find the practice of faith and yoga combined to be a time of prayer, for some it is a time of worship and praise, and still for other’s the physical practice brings them to a place of alert calmness where they may be still, hear God’s voice, experience God’s Presence and love. As a pastor and a yoga instructor, I have found it a blessing to be a conduit of God’s Spirit, sharing the Good News of God’s love in Christ Jesus through the practice of yoga. The practice of yoga in a faith community nurtures faith and the love of God is experienced in a fresh new way. Practicing yoga in a faith community offers people of faith another opportunity to be invitational, reach beyond the walls of the church building to invite someone who may have not felt welcomed in a traditional church setting, but are looking for a new way to express their faith. If you are wondering if Yogadevotion is for you, begin by talking to your Dr. about being physically able to do yoga, ask what kind of yoga is safe for you. The essence of yoga is about breath but we use the postures with breath for overall health and wellness. If you have concerns about Yogadevotion being in conflict with your faith…there is much scholarship out there that speaks to the full range of opinion. I prayerfully leave that decision to be between you, and God.

Peace,
